DIY Clay Ornaments

Here’s what you’ll need…

• 1 box baking soda (about 2 cups)
• 1 cup cornstarch
• 11/2 cups water
• Sauce pan
• Bowl
• Spoon
• Plastic wrap

Here’s how you make it…

Mix all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring consistently, until it is too thick to stir with a spoon.

Cool for 15 minutes, or until the dough is cool enough to touch. Knead it for about 5 minutes, or until smooth. If somewhat sticky I used a little cornstarch on my counter and hands to help.

Once you have molded it, it will take 1-2 days for the clay to dry. I used cookie cutters to make shapes and then used stamps to imprint with words or shapes.

I colored the ornaments with a mixture of water and food coloring. I highlighted the imprint with glitter. You can paint also.

I had a few like this one that cracked or had bumps. I am going to try to sand with a light sandpaper to see if that takes out some of the imperfections.

I also experimented with making a ornament out of a toilet paper roll. I think we have all seen these and other crafts made from a TP roll.

I was very pleased with how it turned out also!

  11. Thanks for the inspiration. I've been trying to think of something to do with the red fimo I accidentally bought a few weeks ago. Now I'll just have to keep an eye out for something to make the pretty imprints.

  16. I've never seen this recipe for clay before. I have some salt dough ornaments baking as we speak, but maybe tomorrow I will try my hand at this. I like the turquoise color you used, and the tp roll ornament is great!
