How to Make an Upcycled Spindle Box

header

Happy Wednesday Friends!

One of my favorite projects from this Summer are the various boxes I made using my collection of spindles.

My collection of spindles are from all sorts of discarded items like tables, chairs, shelves.
Basically anything I find that has interesting details or has an old worn look gets added to my collection.

I used wood we had on hand in my sister’s garage. Some of the wood we used was from old fencing which already had a nice cut edge detail.

None of the spindles were alike so each box had to be cut to its own specific length to fit the length of the spindle.

Each box consisted of 5 cut pieces of wood. 2 for each end, 2 for each side, and one for the bottom.

The boxes were also put together using 1 inch Wood Screws.

Making these was all about using what I had on hand.

To do the different paint finishes I used paint I had in my supply cabinet. The great thing about using the old fencing is that it soaked up paint really well. I was able to water down all the paint I used and do more of a paint wash rather than fully painting each box.

You can now find a few of them scattered around our home being used.
Not only are they useful, they are fun to style with different seasonal items.

  1. Wow you were one busy carpenter lady if all boxes in photo are any indication. Love all different spindles and how you adapted each box to it’s spindle. I never get tired of using those boxes for decorating, organizing, whatever use can put them to. Hubs has made few for me, maybe will repaint them so they have couple different colors showing after being distressed. He’s used a branch for handle on couple of boxes. You did such good job making those, not all at once I hope.
Enjoy your hard work and have great week
