A Simple Way to Clean Vintage Silverware

the-new-you-9

Happy Friday Friends!

I while back I shared a favorite project of mine… {these} stamped silverware. Before starting the project all the silverware my mom had collected for me was really dirty and needed to be cleaned. I thought a large portion of the silverware would need to be thrown away because of how dirty it all was. I was hoping to salvage enough pieces to use in various projects so I got to work trying to find the easiest way to clean it all.

Here are a few pieces in the “before” cleaning state…

and… here is the after…

Here are the steps I took to clean the silverware:

1.) Fill a stockpot with water.
2.) Add to water 1/4 cup of baking soda.
3.) Submerge a piece of aluminum foil in the baking soda water mixture.
4.) Bring water to a boil.
5.) Submerge a handful of silverware into the pan.
6.) Let water and silverware boil for 5 minutes.
7.) Using tongs remove silverware from the boiling water and place on a towel.
Please use precaution in removing the silverware from the stockpot as the water is very hot!
8.) Using a soft towel… buff the entire silverware piece removing all the tarnish.

I had a couple stubborn pieces of silverware that needed to be placed into the pan for a second time, but I was amazed at the results. It was a simple process that went really quickly…which is my favorite type of project. The tarnish just seemed to fall off of each piece of silverware.

  1. HI Chas- I stopped by yesterday via a link party! I did this yesterday on a sterling silver pitcher. It looks so much better. I am going to share on my blog and will include your url since you have prettier pics! My son’s reaction when he saw the pitcher in a pot of water (with a tea kettle on top to weight it down) was priceless.. “Um.. mom what’s going in here?” laura

    1. Oh my goodness… I’m so glad it worked on a bigger piece too! I look forward to seeing your post too. My husband and children have laughed and shook their heads at me many times too when I am in the middle of something creative. 🙂
